Fall Edition
A Sicilian Summer in Sonoma
When one of our dear clients turned 46, she dreamed of bringing the magic of her family’s summer in Sicily back home to her Sonoma backyard. We embraced the abundance of the season with citrus, tomatoes, and vibrant color everywhere. Guests were welcomed with Sicilian lemon and mandarin granita before “picking” San Marzano tomato gazpacho straight from the vine. An Italian quartet set the scene while visiting soccer players taught the kids their favorite street tricks. Interactive stations added whimsy, from charm bracelets to custom-sewn jerseys and totes, ensuring everyone left with a piece of Italy.
Dinner unfolded alfresco on the grass: Sicilian pizza, crisp baby gem salad, and the dreamiest Casarecce Pasta alla Norma. Under twinkling stars, guests danced the night away, fueled by a roaming cannoli bar, passed gelato, and a cake as unforgettable as the evening itself. Design drew heavily from Sicily’s vibrant spirit, including painted Testa di Moro vases, traditional symbols of the island’s artistry and history.
It was a night full of flavor, beauty, and joy, and a reminder that milestone birthdays (even 46!) deserve nothing less than unforgettable magic.
Crushing on Italy
Continuing our current crush on Italy, Amy Soper (our AE luxury travel advisor) lists five of her favorite regions — and the experiences in each — that are absolutely worth the trip.
Amalfi Coast — Tried and True
The Amalfi Coast remains one of my favorite places in the world. Hotel Santa Caterina is a timeless Italian gem and holds a special place for my family, as we got engaged in one of the lemon gardens overlooking the sea. Another spectacular choice is Caruso, a Belmond property in Ravello, where the infinity pool alone makes the trip worthwhile, not to mention the afternoon Aperol Spritz on repeat. For a more intimate (and slightly more affordable) option, Casa Privata is a tucked-away treasure. And if you’re up for the challenge, hike the steps from Amalfi up to Ravello for breathtaking views - especially from the Villa Cimbrone gardens - and a wander through the charming town.
Dolomites — Adventure & Elegance
With the Winter Olympics coming in 2026, the Dolomites are finally stepping into the global spotlight. Imagine rolling alpine meadows, dramatic peaks, and endless adventure. In summer, climb the via ferrata; in winter, ski down pristine slopes of the Dolomiti Superski (on the Ikon pass). This year also brings the opening of Aman Rosa Alpina, an iconic hotel we cannot wait to experience. For something whimsical, check out My Arbor Dolomites — a treehouse-style retreat where you can sleep among the treetops.
Umbria — Classic Countryside Italy
Often overshadowed by Tuscany, Umbria is equally enchanting with its rolling hills, olive groves, and timeless hill towns. Stays like Tenuta di Murlo or Reschio capture the region’s rustic elegance, encompassing beautiful estates. And don't miss Deruta, where centuries-old ceramic traditions come alive in colorful, handcrafted, classic pieces. For a wellness retreat with a soulful twist, Eremito offers a contemporary monastery experience that feels both grounding and luxurious.
Aeolian Islands — Off the Beaten Path
Floating just off Sicily’s northern coast, the Aeolian Islands are rugged, romantic, and still blissfully under the radar. Each island has its own personality — volcanic Stromboli, chic Panarea, tranquil Salina. For a luxurious stay, Capofaro Resort offers a dreamy blend of Sicilian and Greek island vibes. If you’re after something more budget-friendly but equally beautiful, Principe di Salina is a wonderful choice.
Rome — After Dark
Rome has long been one of my favorite cities. I loved visiting a close friend who lived there and discovering how seamlessly modern life unfolds among ancient ruins. While Rome dazzles by day, it truly shines at night — think late dinners in tucked-away trattorias, guided Colosseum tours under the stars, or open-air concerts in historic ruins. And for something casual but unforgettable, AL42 Street Food serves some of the best pasta in the city (including gluten-free options). Arrive early to beat the line!
The AE Five
Italian favorites, curated by the AE team, that you can find stateside:
1. Eats: Marea
When in New York, one of our very favorite Italian spots is Marea. Set along the edge of Central Park, it’s quintessential NYC dining—elegant yet inviting, and always unforgettable. The food is extraordinary, make room for the burrata bruschetta with caviar, you won’t be sorry.
For those on the West Coast, Marea recently opened in Beverly Hills, bringing its signature magic to LA. And between us—there’s chatter of an Aspen pop-up on the horizon. Wherever it lands, Marea is always worth it.
2. Tread: Freda Salvador Sneakers
We live in our Freda Salvador leather sneakers—crafted from the highest quality leather, they’re chic, versatile, and built to last season after season. Perfect for travel days, party set-ups, or just running around town, they strike the balance between style and comfort. Pro tip: don’t sleep on the shearling-lined pair for fall and winter—they’re as cozy as they are cool.
3. Sip: Negroni Sbagliato with Prosecco
Beyond an Aperol Spritz: try a Negroni Sbagliato with Prosecco. Great for entertaining, and easy to make at home.
4. Wear: La DoubleJ
We can’t get enough of La DoubleJ, the Milan-based brand that brings joy and boldness to everything it touches. Known for its vibrant, vintage-inspired prints, La DoubleJ has expanded from fashion into the most playful, party-perfect homewares: think colorful dinner plates, patterned linens, and chic glassware that instantly turn any table into a celebration.
We love mixing their pieces into our event designs—or even just for a small dinner at home—because they capture that effortless Italian way of making every moment feel festive. A little La DoubleJ goes a long way in transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary.
5. La Dolce Vita: Venchi Chocolate
When it comes to hostess gifts, nothing feels more timeless—or more delicious—than Venchi chocolate. Founded in Piedmont in 1878, Venchi is a true Italian icon, known for luxurious gianduiotti, creamy pralines, and perfectly packaged bars that are as beautiful as they are indulgent.
We love to stock up on their assorted boxes and keep them on hand for gifting—whether it’s a dinner party, a weekend away, or a little thank-you. It’s an effortless way to bring a touch of Italy to any occasion, and a guaranteed crowd-pleaser.
And finally, we will leave you with a little Italian playlist, best enjoyed with your next aperitivo.
