When I first embarked on my journey in the events industry, resources were scarce. Besides leaning on friends and family, your options were quite limited. City colleges might have offered a wedding planning class, but that usually meant assisting an overworked wedding planner for school credit. Back then, we had Safari and Facebook, and later Style Me Pretty and Twitter which certainly helped, but finding reliable resources often required creativity and persistence.

For instance, I once negotiated with a local rodeo in Costa Rica to "rent" their chairs and tables due to a lack of rental options in Playa Grande. When I needed a wedding cake baker, I was advised to find her out on the water, so I went surfing in Mexico to make connections since local bakeries weren't up to par. In Hawaii, I had to find a carpenter to build custom bars and DJ booths, as local rentals were outdated. I even had to convince a housekeeper to sew table linens from fabric we sourced because available rental options were subpar.

We didn't have YouTube for tutorials or Instagram to see what other planners were doing or working with. Back then, it was all about picking up the phone and begging other planners for information—often at a cost—and phone books were still in use.
