Tiny Atlas Creative Retreat

There is nothing more rejuvenating than time spent in nature, and here in California we are surrounded by such natural beauty that it’s key to take a step outside and use that beauty to creatively recharge from time to time. We recently had the unique opportunity to join Tiny Atlas’ creative community at one of their retreats, and we were beyond inspired.

Nestled in the canyons, surrounded by towering redwoods, coastal terrain, and fresh ocean air, we were led through workshops to flex our creative muscles in writing, photography and drawing. Days were spent in exploration of the natural beauty and our artistic voices. And nights were enjoyed with serenades and stories, building relationships around the fire. It was a true glamping experience that allowed us to fully recharge and reconnect.

Our 15th Anniversary Holiday Party

Photography by Braedon Photography

Every year, we host a holiday party to thank the vendors who have worked so hard with us all season, as well as to take some time to reflect, unwind, and have a little fun. This year was extra special, as we were celebrating our 15th anniversary! We headed up to a gorgeous estate in Healdsburg, where we filled the space with a colorful Moroccan-inspired design in honor of 15 years of celebrations around the world.

It all started with the food. We wanted a menu that was fun, fresh, and new, and wanted to be able to seat our guests at two long tables to facilitate laughter, conversation, and connection. Moroccan food is spicy, complex, and colorful — the perfect place to start when it came to design. We turned to the marketplace for floral inspiration, incorporating vibrant colors alongside fresh fruits and seed pods. Linens included a mixture of textiles and fabrics for texture, placed on the tables and even hung from the ceiling.

The meal was full of spice and flavor. Braised chicken tagine was served with cauliflower couscous and pickled raisins, followed by a family-style meal that included winter citrus salad, baharat-spiced braised beef cheeks with laurel leaves, braised halibut with coriander and lemon verbena, and winter squash with ras el hanout. For dessert, we served bergamot orange tea macarons dipped in dark chocolate and itakuja chocolate cremeux with kumquat confit and pomegranate.

Of course, the night ended with dancing! It was so fun to spend a few hours with our incredible creative partners, marking a milestone year and the end of another incredible wedding season.

Venue Spotlight: Rancho Valencia

California is full of totally gorgeous venues for weddings and celebrations. While we wish we could visit them all, sometimes we need a fantastic reason to get in the car and drive. That’s why we were so thrilled when Brooke Keegan invited us to spend the weekend at Rancho Valencia! Located in Rancho Santa Fe, this resort and spa has it all: Hacienda styling, inviting courtyards, cozy suites with in-room fireplaces, and incredible food that will make your guests wish they could stay forever. Take a peek at these incredible photos by Braedon Photography, and you’ll see what we mean!

Thank you so much to Brooke and the Rancho Valencia team for having us as your guests!

Reflections and Resolutions

Another year has come and gone, filled with great events, projects, and couples. We’re excited to see what 2014 has to bring. To celebrate the new year, a few reflections and resolutions…

In 2013, we helped 17 couples get hitched and worked on 6 other parties. Mexico, California, Rhode Island, and The Bahamas topped our list of most popular locations, but we also ventured to new lands, including Marrakesh, Santorini, St. Tropez, Barcelona, St. Moritz, and Saigon.

In 2014, we’re looking forward to working in Maui, Cabo San Lucas, New York, France, and of course California. Our very own Alison will tie the knot, too, which we’ll be sharing more on in the weeks to come.

We’ve been so fortunate to work with such great couples and talented professionals, and all around the globe no less. It’ll be exciting to see what the next 12 months will bring our way! You can always see what we’re up to on our instagram too, which is @alison_events.

Happy New Year everyone!

Research Trip: Greece – Where to Stay

Hands down, the most incredible spot to score a stay in Santorini is at the Perivolas Hideaway: the private property is set in a secluded cove on the island of Therasia – a boat ride away from the harbor of Santorini. To check it out, Amy and I hopped on a boat and were whisked away to the spectacular hideaway right on the water. Perfect for a wedding party, the place has 4 bedrooms including a suite separate from the main house.

If you want to forego the private island, the Perivolas Resort on the cliffs of Santorini is absolutely stunning (with an infinity pool almost touching the Med) and the Chelidonia is a slightly more casual, less-expensive option too. I know I’ll be making a return trip.

xo, Alison

Alison Events & La Cocina Inaugural Gala

We had the honor of being asked to be on the committee for La Cocina’s Inaugural Gala. For those of you who aren’t familiar with La Cocina,  meaning “The Kitchen” in Spanish…they are San Francisco’s first incubator kitchen.

“The mission of La Cocina is to cultivate low income food entrepreneurs as they formalize and grow their businesses by providing affordable commercial kitchen space, industry-specific technical assistance and access to market opportunities. We focus primarily on women from communities of color and immigrant communities. Our vision is that entrepreneurs gain financial security by doing what they love to do, creating an innovative, vibrant and inclusive economic landscape.” – La Cocina

The Bently Reserve was transformed into a warm and inviting space where honorary hosts, invited guests, and La Cocina program participants came together to celebrate the significant role women – and mothers – play within our food culture.

Lidia Sadoun of La Fleuriste was the master mind behind the “kitchen” inspired florals. The centerpieces were all in mixed kitchen vessels such as colanders, glass measuring bowls, and tea glasses with metal cuffs.  Cocktail hour felt alive and warm with beautiful patterned and textured linens from La Tavola and speciality mixed cocktails from Rye on the Road. However, dinner was the main attraction with a once in a lifetime meal for 250 guests by acclaimed New York chef and author of “Blood, Bones, and Butter” Gabrielle Hamilton.

Alison has being working pro bono with this amazing organization for a while now so we were delighted when we were asked to join the committee and design their first Gala.

Needless to say, it was truly an amazing night! Thank you La Cocina for including us and we look forward to many, many more together!

A very special thank you to Josh Gruetzmacher for the capturing the event beautifully on film!

Behind the scenes: Event Space Consulting

Event Space Consulting (our sister company) is excited to be working with one of our favorite venues in Wyoming called Brush Creek Ranch on the styling of the wait staff for the  2103 season.  We recently visited Small Trade Company  who has designed uniforms for the Paula Le Duc Catering team as well as Blue Bottle Coffee.  They also custom make great bags and shirts and other amazing accessories for my two favorite SF stores; Mill Mercantile and Union Made .  We fell in love with the denim aprons with leather waist ties and the attention to detail is amazing.  Perfect for the ranch staff. If only we had the budget to do their indigo dyed shirts! Next year…
Check out some of the inspiration….and check back soon for the final looks. ESC is headed out to Wyoming to photograph everything in June.
The workshop.
Reversible denim aprons with leather tie!
Shirt inspiration for the men…with options to have the shirts made in plaid.
Matt Dick the founder/owner and Alison
Working away on these hand woven bags made of denim remnants!
Wheat linen aprons for breakfast & lunch staff with dark denim jeans, brown suede clarks and a crisp white or navy v-neck t-shirt. The idea is at night they add a vest and wear their cowboy boots and the look is still consistent but has a more western feel. The apron is also reversible!

AE Destination Wedding: Jodi + Michael

Last month one of our all time favorite weddings, Jodi + Michael was featured on Brides.com and we couldn’t wait to share more! This awesome couple planned the adventure of a lifetime for 60 of their closest friends and family at the incredible Escenia boutique hotel in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. No detail was left without a personal touch! Thank you Jodi + Michael for letting us be apart of your special day!
